How the times stay right
- Rules, not fixed offsets
- Every zone is an IANA identifier such as America/New_York, so each date gets the offset that was or will be in force.
- Clock changes handled
- A time skipped by spring forward is flagged and moved; a time that happens twice in autumn shows both readings.
- Real boundaries
- The map draws more than 400 zone areas, so Arizona, the Indiana counties on Central Time and Mexico’s Quintana Roo are shaded on their own rules.
- Links that keep the time
- Copy link saves both zones, the date and the time, so a meeting invite opens on the exact moment.
How to use the time zone converter
The converter opens on India Standard Time and New York because that is one of the pairs people look up most, but both sides can be any zone in the world.
Pick the two zones
Click the zone under From or To and start typing. You can search by city (Chicago, Lagos, Kathmandu), by abbreviation (PST, CET, AEST), by the full name (Gulf Standard Time) or by offset (+5:45). The popular zones come first, and the rest of the list covers every IANA zone your browser supports, which is several hundred of them.
The arrow button between the two clocks swaps them. That's quicker than picking both zones again when you need the reverse conversion, say PST to IST after IST to PST.
Set the time and the date
Click either clock and type the time you have in mind, such as 2:30 or 14:30, then press Enter. The up and down arrow keys move the time in 15-minute steps, and holding Shift moves it an hour at a time. The AM or PM label beside the clock flips between the two halves of the day.
You can type into either side, and the other clock follows. If a colleague in Sydney says "let's talk at 8 in the morning my time", put 8:00 AM on the Sydney side and read your own time off the other clock. There's no need to swap the zones first.
The date controls sit just under the clocks. The arrows step one day back or forward, and the date button opens a calendar. If you leave the date alone you get today's answer, which can be an hour out for a meeting three weeks away if a clock change falls in between. The Now button resets both clocks to the current minute.
Read the result
The line under the clocks says how far ahead or behind the second zone is on that date. Next to the second date, a small label reads Same day, Next day or Previous day. That label is the part people miss most often when converting between Asia and the Americas, where an evening call on one side is the next morning on the other.
Below that, each side shows the zone's full name, its UTC offset on that date, whether it is on standard or daylight saving time, and its IANA identifier. The 12h and 24h switch changes how every time on the page is written, and the site remembers your choice for the next visit.
Planning a meeting across time zones
Converting one time is easy. Finding an hour that suits both people is the harder part, and that's what the day ribbon and the hourly table are for.
The day ribbon
The two strips under the date show a full day in each zone, and the lit band on each strip is that zone's 9 AM to 5 PM. Where the two bands line up, both people are at work. Drag the handle along the ribbon and both clocks move together in 15-minute steps, so you can slide through the day and see exactly where one side runs into the evening.
For zones close together, like London and Berlin, the bands overlap for most of the day. For zones far apart, like Los Angeles and Bangalore, they barely touch or don't meet at all, and the real decision is which side starts early or stays late.
Hour by hour
Further up the page there's a table with every hour of the chosen day side by side. Rows where both zones are inside working hours are shaded, and the line beside the table tells you how much of the day overlaps. Click any row to load that time into the converter.
On the day a zone changes its clocks, the table has 23 or 25 rows instead of 24, because that is how many hours the day really has there. It's a quick way to spot a clock change you didn't know was coming.
When there's no good slot
Once the gap passes about eight hours, no time is comfortable for everyone. Teams split between India and the US West Coast, or between Europe and Australia, usually end up with one side on an early call and the other on a late one. Taking turns is fairer than always asking the same office to stay up. The ribbon makes the trade visible: move the handle an hour either way and you can see who pays for it.
Why time zone conversion goes wrong
Most mistakes come from treating a time zone as a fixed number of hours from UTC. For much of the world it isn't, and the converter is built around that.
Daylight saving starts on different dates
The United States moves its clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November. The UK and the European Union switch on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. So for two or three weeks in March, and again for about a week around the start of November, New York is four hours behind London instead of the usual five. A meeting set up by "just subtracting five" lands an hour off in those weeks. You can see the shifting gap on the UK to EST and CET to EST pages.
The southern hemisphere runs the other way. Sydney and Melbourne go onto daylight time in early October and come off in early April, so the gap between Sydney and London moves between 9 and 11 hours over the year. Queensland, just to the north, doesn't change its clocks at all, which puts Brisbane on the same time as Sydney for half the year and an hour behind it for the other half.
Many countries don't use daylight saving at all. India, Japan, China, Singapore, the UAE and Pakistan stay on one offset all year. That is why the difference between India and New York moves between 9 hours 30 minutes and 10 hours 30 minutes even though India's clocks never change. The IST to EST page lists the exact dates.
The rules keep changing
Governments change their time zone rules more often than most people realise. Mexico dropped daylight saving for most of the country in 2022. Kazakhstan moved to a single time zone in 2024. Samoa jumped across the International Date Line at the end of 2011 and skipped 30 December entirely. A converter that stores one fixed offset per country gets cases like these wrong without anyone noticing.
This one uses the IANA time zone database, the same source used by phones, operating systems and most programming languages. Each zone is a named region such as America/New_York or Asia/Kolkata with a full history of its offsets. A date in the past gets the rules that applied then, and a date next year gets the rules that are scheduled. The conversion runs in your browser against its built-in copy of that database, so keeping your browser up to date keeps the rules current.
Abbreviations are ambiguous
CST can mean Central Standard Time in North America, China Standard Time or Cuba Standard Time. IST is used for India, Israel and Ireland. BST is British Summer Time to most people and Bangladesh Standard Time to others. People also say EST all year when they mean Eastern Time, even though New York is on EDT from March to November.
Search accepts abbreviations, but the zone the converter works with is always a named place. Pick Eastern Time and you get New York's rules, with EST in winter and EDT in summer, which is almost always what someone means when they write "EST". The full name and IANA identifier under each clock show exactly which zone you're looking at.
Not every offset is a whole hour
India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC. Nepal is 5:45 ahead, Newfoundland is 3:30 behind, the Northern Territory of Australia is 9:30 ahead, and New Zealand's Chatham Islands run 12:45 ahead in their winter. Mental arithmetic tends to slip on these, especially when the answer also crosses midnight. The converter treats them like any other offset, as you can check on the UTC to IST page.
Clock changes create times that don't exist
When clocks spring forward in New York at 2:00 AM, they go straight to 3:00 AM, so a time like 2:30 AM never happens there on that date. If you type one, the converter says so and moves it to the first real time after the gap.
In autumn the opposite happens. The hour from 1:00 to 1:59 AM occurs twice, once on daylight time and once on standard time. The converter shows the first and tells you which abbreviation the second one uses, so you can decide which one you meant before sending an invite.
Real zone boundaries on the map
Country borders and time zone borders are not the same thing, and a map that colours whole countries hides the cases that cause the most confusion. The map above draws more than 400 zone areas from the timezone-boundary-builder project, which is built on OpenStreetMap data.
A few you can find on it: most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, while the Navajo Nation in the north-east of the state follows daylight saving. Several Indiana counties near Chicago and Evansville use Central Time while the rest of the state uses Eastern. Quintana Roo, the Mexican state that includes Cancún, sits an hour ahead of Mexico City all year. China keeps a single time zone across a country wide enough for five.
The two zones you've selected are shaded in their own colours. Lighter shading marks zones that share the same UTC offset right now but follow different rules, usually because they change their clocks on other dates or not at all. Hover over any region to see its local time, or click it to open its details and load it with Use as From or Use as To. Drag to pan, and pinch or hold Ctrl and scroll to zoom. From the keyboard, plus and minus zoom, the arrow keys pan and zero resets the view.
Sharing a converted time
Copy link puts both zones, the date and the time into the page address. Paste it into a calendar invite or a chat, and whoever opens it sees the same moment in both zones. That's more reliable than writing "3 PM my time" and leaving the other person to do the sums, especially in the weeks around a clock change.
The most common pairs also have their own pages, listed above under All conversions. Each one has a reference table of common times, the periods when the gap changes this year and next, the upcoming clock changes in both zones and a suggested meeting window. Some of the most used are IST to EST, EST to PST, PST to IST, UK time to EST, UTC to IST and EST to AEST.
Time zone questions, answered
Questions about specific pairs are on the FAQ page.
What is my time zone?
Your device reports its time zone to the browser, and the converter home page shows it under the main heading as "Your time zone". To see how your time compares with somewhere else, pick your zone under From and the other place under To.
What are the time zones in the USA?
The contiguous United States uses four main zones: Eastern Time (EST/EDT), used in New York, Florida, Washington DC; Central Time (CST/CDT), used in Chicago, Texas, Dallas; Mountain Time (MST/MDT), used in Denver, Arizona, Phoenix; Pacific Time (PST/PDT), used in California, Los Angeles, San Francisco. Alaska and Hawaii have their own zones. Most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, and a few Indiana counties use Central Time while the rest of the state is on Eastern. The map on the converter page draws the real boundaries.
Is the time zone converter free?
Yes. There's no account to create and no limit on how many conversions you run. Everything is worked out in your browser.
Does it account for daylight saving time?
Yes, for every date. The offset comes from the rules in force on the date you pick, not from today's offset, so a conversion for next March or last November uses the clocks that apply on that day.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
For converting times there is none: both have a zero offset. UTC is the time standard kept by atomic clocks. GMT is the name of the time zone the UK uses in winter, and that Iceland and several West African countries use all year. In summer the UK is not on GMT but on BST, one hour ahead.
How many time zones are there?
In theory there are 24 one-hour bands. In practice about 38 different offsets are in use, from UTC-12 to UTC+14, including the half-hour and 45-minute ones. The IANA database splits these into several hundred named zones, because places that share an offset today may have had different rules in the past or may change their clocks on different dates.
Why does the time difference between two cities change during the year?
Because at least one of them observes daylight saving time, or both do but switch on different dates. New York and London, for example, are five hours apart for most of the year and four hours apart for a few weeks in March and around the start of November.
Can I convert a time in the past or the future?
Yes. Pick a date with the calendar or the day arrows and the converter applies the rules for that date. Future dates use the rules that are currently scheduled. If a government changes them later, the result updates once your browser's time zone data does.
What does "Next day" mean under the second clock?
It means the second zone has already reached the following calendar date at the moment you are converting. "Previous day" means it is still on the day before. This happens often between Asia or Australia and the Americas.
Does the converter work without JavaScript?
The live converter and the map need JavaScript. The pages for each pair still show their reference tables, the periods when the gap changes and the upcoming clock change dates without it.
